그의 '6단계 분리(six degrees of separation)' 가설(!)은, 서로 다른 두 사람이 시, 공간적으로 아무리 멀리 떨어져 있어도 그들 사이에 있는 인간관계망 6단계를 거치며 서로 '연결'된다고 주장한다.
이 '6단계 분리' 이론은 '작은 세상 현상(small world phenomen 또는 small world paradigm 위키정보)' 가설과도 연결된다.
영국 BBC2에서 최근 이를 42분짜리 다큐멘타리 영상으로 제작하였다. 특히 이 '작은 세상 현상' 이론이 웹/소셜 미디어에 적용될 때 어떤 의미를 가질 수 있는지를 소상히 다루고 있다. 영어도 쉬운 편이다.
